Activating Spiritual Senses: Opening the Eyes of the Heart - Part 8 The Key of David

David Mitts

'Then it shall be in that day, That I will call My servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah; I will clothe him with your robe And strengthen him with your belt; I will commit your responsibility into his hand. He shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem And to the house of Judah. The key of the house of David I will lay on his shoulder; So he shall open, and no one shall shut; And he shall shut, and no one shall open. I will fasten him as a peg in a secure place, And he will become a glorious throne to his father's house. 'They will hang on him all the glory of his father's house, the offspring and the posterity, all vessels of small quantity, from the cups to all the pitchers. In that day,' says the LORD of hosts, 'the peg that is fastened in the secure place will be removed and be cut down and fall, and the burden that was on it will be cut off; for the LORD has spoken.' "” (Isa 22:20-25, NKJV)

Offering: You Are God's Ambassador - Colossians 3:23

Last chapter we spoke about the key of knowledge as a gateway to seeing in the Spirit and how the Pharisees through their perceived religious authority manipulated the people by defining holiness through their “knowledge”.

““Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge; you yourselves did not enter, and you hindered those who were entering.”” (Luk 11:52, NASB)

If we back up a few verses, we see the context:

But He said, Woe to you lawyers as well! For you load people with burdens that are hard to bear, while you yourselves will not even touch the burdens with one of your fingers.Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and it was your fathers who killed them. So you are witnesses and you approve of the deeds of your fathers; because it was they who killed them, and you build their tombs. For this reason also, the wisdom of God said, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill, and some they will persecute, so that the blood of all the prophets, shed since the foundation of the world, may be charged against this generation, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the house of God; yes, I tell you, it shall be charged against this generation.Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge; you yourselves did not enter, and you hindered those who were entering.”” (Luke 11:46-52, NASB)

It is the prophetic and apostolic anointing that this “knowledge” key is locked against. Going all the way back to Abel and including Zechariah, Yeshua is identifying the root cause of the violence against the prophetic purposes of God. Lest we think anything is different today, we only have to go back to the recent Covid chaos and realize how violent “knowledge” or “science” can be. People were excluded from weddings, visiting loved ones and many other scenarios all based on “knowledge” what today is called “science”. The fault is not with science of knowledge but with the gatekeepers and their blood thirsty desperate need for power and control.

Pure science is not the issue. By pure, I mean science that is inquisitive and humbly seeks to learn and understand the way things exist and operate. The issue is when “science”becomes religion. This occurs when we are told to just “trust” the science. Trust is not an intellectual quality but a yielding of the heart, When we are told to just shut up and trust the science we are actually being told to be unscientific and instead allow the gatekeepers of “knowledge” to tell us what is true and what isn’t. If they can’t get their way then we see their true colors.

In this chapter, I want look at another power key to restore the prophetic, the key of David. Let’s look at Isaiah 22 again and then go to Revelation.

Isaiah 22:20-22.

As we spoke about last chapter, this was a leadership change for Israel. It represents the heart of the father and operates in the prophetic key of David which is put on His shoulder. The shoulder, schehem in Hebrew is the place of bearing a burden or a yoke. Keys represent power to decide with authority over designated areas of responsibility.

So, what is the Key of David? True with me to the Church of Philadelphia in Revelation 3:7:

"And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write, 'These things says He who is holy, He who is true, "HE WHO HAS THE KEY OF DAVID, HE WHO OPENS AND NO ONE SHUTS, AND SHUTS AND NO ONE OPENS": "I know your works. See, I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it; for you have a little strength, have kept My word, and have not denied My name. Indeed I will make those of the synagogue of Satan, who say they are Jews and are not, but lie—indeed I will make them come and worship before your feet, and to know that I have loved you. Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth. Behold, I am coming quickly! Hold fast what you have, that no one may take your crown. He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall go out no more. I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God. And I will write on him My new name. "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches." '(Rev 3:7-13, NKJV)

This is a pretty intense and important “power” key. First and foremost the “key” is Yeshua’s. He opens and closes the doors. He sets before the Church an open door which no one can close. Our part is keep His Word and Not deny His Name. What does that mean?

He has already answered this by telling us: Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.” (John 14:23, NKJV)

Keeping His Word is another way of saying loving Him. Combining that with not denying His Name, moves this into the realm of covenant. The Hebrew word used for “keep” is also used for watching over an area of responsibility. The word is “natzar”:

Natzar: To Watch Over / Guard

Definition: To guard, keep, protect, or preserve.

Word Picture (Paleo-Hebrew):

Nun (נ): Seed or continuous life.

Tzaddi (צ): Fishhook or a desire/need.

Resh (ר): Head of a person. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Meaning: "A continuous watchful eye for the sake of preserving life."

Scriptural Context: Found in verses like Psalm 121:4 where God watches over His people, and Proverbs 4:23 ("watch over/guard your heart”).

When we are connecting “keeping” the Word and love it is the picture of giving your heart to what is important to another and treating it with your highest respect and regard.

Maybe we can now get an idea of why this is called the key of David. David was chosen not for his external qualifications of size, strength or power but because of His heart of love. Samuel in communication God’s rejection of selfish Saul and the selection of David said:

““But now your kingdom shall not endure. The LORD has sought for Himself a man after His own heart, and the LORD has appointed him ruler over His people, because you have not kept what the LORD commanded you.”” (1Sa 13:14, NASB)

It isn’t only obey obeying the Word of God but also about treasuring Him and His love. Going back to Revelations 3 and the word to Philadelphian church, Yeshua identifies those who claim to be Jews but are a synagogue of Satan. My personal opinion is that He is referring to the gatekeepers, the religious spirit again. The reference to Satan I think is to reveal the spirit of accusation. I think this because He says that will come to worship at their feet and see how much the true Believers are loved, enough to keep them safe from the tribulations.

I don’t think this is an escape clause but rather an open door of communication and guidance. He then tells them that it is because they have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth. The key word here is again “keep”. The Church is “keeping” His command to preserve. You don’t persevere unless you are challenged to give up. The Church in turn is “kept” from the hour of trial that comes upon the whole world. I don’t think He takes the church off the planet but that He protects what is important in this hour. What is important?

Expecting Him to come quickly. He is looking for a Bride that believes in His imminent return. This He describes as: Hold fast what you have, that no one may take your crown. He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall go out no more. I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God. And I will write on him My new name.

This is the key of David. Includes a crown meaning an authority that comes from keeping His instructions. It comes from an intimacy.  Yeshua says He write the name of God on those who overcome. This is a covenant declaration, similar to Jeremiah 31. The New Jerusalem is the symbol of the bride.

Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God.” (Rev 21:2-3, NKJV)

David built the tabernacle of worship. This is the key of David which opens the doors of intimacy with God which cannot be opened any other way. Worship produces intimacy.

We say, that someone is “head over heels in love” and  that they “worship the ground the other walks on”. In other words the key of David, the total love abandoned worship transforms the ground we walk on. It transforms territory and kingdom.

Jerusalem is the symbol of the kingdom. This is why Jerusalem has been restored to the earth to open up the final doors that no man open.

The restoration of Israel to the Land is a declaration of love. The reason Jerusalem is in the earth today is not just a political statement of the Jews having a homeland. That is certainly part of it. But this is more about God and His love than about people and their suffering. He is bigger than our suffering and loves us even when live our suffering through our sin.

Jerusalem comes down prepared as a bride. Notice she doesn’t go up. In this revelation Jerusalem is transformed in heaven and returns to the earth. God tells us the tabernacle of God is with men and that He will dwell with us and we shall be His people. This is oneness of covenant. What is key is that it comes down and is a tabernacle. Next time we’ll dive deep into the significance of the tabernacle.

Hi David and Lisa, I have done at least 5 Revelation studies and am currently in BSF for the year studying Revelation. I can honestly say I have never understood or made sense of the book of Revelation until lately. I have been going over your series of Revelation, along with the BSF workbook and class. I have never had a clearer understanding of the four horsemen., the 7 seals, and the 7 trumpets, which we are currently on in BSF, where they give thought-provoking questions, and then you have given me the answers. I really appreciate you for teaching all of this and Charles for taking the time to post and send it to me. It takes time to absorb it all, which I couldn't fully do with the Shabbat meetings(and I missed some), so having the whole series to keep going back to has been such a help in understanding Revelation. I have even shared with my BSF group what the four horsemen represent, which none of them knew. Thank you so much for your work and support. Love and blessings to all of you!
